The Huntley Street Project

We’re Developing More Transitional Housing!

In June 2018, Fife House entered into a 20-year lease for 9 Huntley Street with the City of Toronto. Fife House will develop and provide an 18-month transitional housing program at the 9 Huntley site for persons living with HIV/AIDS who are in, or entering, the shelter system.

9 Huntley was first constructed in 1900. In 1988, Casey House opened Canada’s first AIDS hospice here, which evolved into an HIV specialty hospital. Casey House delivered compassionate care and services at this location for close to 30 years before moving across the street to their new facility to expand their services.

Fife House will build upon this legacy of the delivery of compassionate care and support services as it develops a first of its kind Transitional Housing Program, for some of the most marginalized and medically complex people living with HIV/AIDS in the City of Toronto. We are excited and feel it is poignant that we embarking on this project in our 30th Anniversary Year.

In partnership with the City of Toronto Shelter Services, Habitat Services, and The Inner City Family Health Team, and with the support of two operational funders, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Central LHIN, the program will deliver onsite 7/24 residential and personal care supports, intensive case management, and access to clinical supports including primary care, psychiatry, nursing, and occupational therapy.

Initially, clients coming into the program will be men coming from Seaton House as part of the George Street Revitalization. The three-storey structure and program model will eventually support women, men and trans individuals in or accessing the shelter system — filling a vital gap in service delivery that exists currently in the City of Toronto.

The unique staffing and program model will support a rehabilitative process for residents who face chronic health conditions, mental health and substance use issues, homelessness, social isolation, and often a lack of connection to HIV primary care.

After residents are connected to care and supports, and have been supported by their individualized care and support plans to build life skills, they will transition to longer term supportive or independent housing.
