CM’s Story

Many people who turn to Fife House have experienced the intersecting impacts of HIV stigma, discrimination, poverty, and housing instability. We recognize that homelessness is not a choice, but the result of complex challenges and barriers. That’s why we meet people where they are—with dignity, compassion, and without judgment—providing safe housing and various supports that help people regain stability, improve their health, and build brighter futures.

“What I love most about living at Fife House is the incredible sense of community. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by compassionate staff and advocates who genuinely care about the people they support. Seeing familiar, friendly faces every day creates a sense of belonging and reminds me that I am never alone.

Fife House offers so much more than housing. They create opportunities for people to connect, heal, and enjoy life through programs and events such as massage therapy, sound baths, grocery support through Second Harvest, movie nights, barbecues, holiday celebrations at Christmas and other special occasions, and many other community activities. These experiences have helped me build meaningful relationships, reduce isolation, and create positive memories.

Fife House has completely transformed my life. What stands out most is that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

The staff meet people where they are, understanding that everyone has their own story and unique challenges. Whether someone is navigating trauma, mental health struggles, addiction, or other life obstacles, they provide support without judgment. They create a safe environment where vulnerable people are empowered to heal, grow, and become the best versions of themselves.

After experiencing homelessness from the age of 16 and surviving human trafficking, I entered Fife House’s Transitional Housing Program in early 2019. At the time, I was living with immense complex trauma and was in the early stages of my recovery from addiction. I was referred to Fife House through Covenant House Toronto’s specialized human trafficking support program, and it became one of the most important turning points in my life.

The staff believed in me during a time when I struggled to believe in myself. Through their unwavering support, advocacy, and compassion, they helped protect me from further violence, provided me with stability, and connected me with the resources I needed to begin rebuilding my life.

Eventually, through Fife House Housing, I was able to move into my very first apartment. Holding those keys in my hands for the first time was one of the proudest and most emotional moments of my life. After years of surviving without a place to truly call home, I finally had a safe space where I could begin to heal. Having stable housing has given me the foundation to move forward in ways I never imagined possible. Since finding that stability, I have maintained my recovery, focused on my education, and worked toward building a meaningful future.

Today, I am studying to become a Social Service Worker because I want to give back to others using the knowledge, compassion, and lived experience I have gained throughout my own journey. I hope to support people facing challenges similar to those I once experienced and help them believe that healing and recovery are possible.
